COVID-19 brought changes to the college sports landscape since March when the pandemic ramped up. As the basketball season approaches, an administrator in the Northwest Missouri State University athletic department will play a key role in deciding what it will look like navigating around the coronavirus.

Bearcat Deputy Athletic Director Lori Hopkins is the new chairperson of the NCAA Division 2 Women's Basketball National Committee.

Jason Martens of St. Mary's in Texas previously filled the role for four years. Hopkins is honored to take over as the chair, and knows some interesting challenges lie ahead.

"To be the national chair for Division 2 women's basketball is like a dream come true for me," Hopkins said. "To be able to be that person to sit at the table for women's basketball, and not only do I get to be a part of Division 2 women's basketball, but I sit in on the calls for Division 1, too, and it's just quite an honor for me."

"Amid this whole pandemic and what's going on, there are so many things that are changing, and who knows what's going to happen with basketball as far as championships, and what that's going to look like, and what will regional rankings look like now. Not only do I get to be the national chair this year, but now I get to be involved in all different kinds of changes that might happen this year. I'm excited to represent Northwest at that level, and I can't wait to get going."

Along with the national committee for women's basketball, she's also the chair of the MIAA's COVID-19 Task Force.
